Yuyuan Garden, Shanghai, China - Alice Gebura

On a recent trip to China I visited the Yuyuan Garden in Shanghai. Created by a governor of the Ming Dynasty, the garden strives to evoke "water and mountains" and consist of discrete areas linked by paths and walkways. All plantings have symbolic significance (bamboo, lotus, pine, chrysanthemum). River rock shaped by years of water wear are highly prized. I toured the garden on Jan. 1, 2011.
